Five of the best outdoor running routes in Dubai

Runners can get pretty set in their ways. However, Dubai offers so many amazing outdoor running routes that are just waiting to be explored.

Trying a different location for your jog can provide you with just the motivation you need to smash your PB, and help you get an extra sense of fulfilment out of your cardio session.

In fact, with the winter weather at its coolest and most refreshing, there has never been a better time to ditch the treadmill and get outside to explore Dubai’s many beautiful running routes.

Here are five of the best, tried-and-tested routes to try this season.

Kite Beach

The iconic green spongy track that runs along Jumeirah Beach Road is a magnet for fitness-lovers from all walks of life. With a bit of cushioning underfoot so it’s easy on the legs, and the track stretches over 14km, starting at the Burj Al Arab, running down past Kite Beach and stretching all the way over the new Dubai Water Canal. If you’re tracking your distance run, you’ll find handy signage every 100 meters to tell you how far you’ve gone. You’ll be among good company too, as it’s a popular spot for families, serious runners and casual fitness types alike. The amazing views of the majestic Burj Al Arab are bound to make that 6am start feel far less painful, and don’t forget to pack a towel for a post-run swim.

The Palm

The boardwalk of the Palm Jumeirah is flat, wide and usually rather empty – everything you want from a running route. From tip to tip, the Crescent is about 11 kilometers, so if you start and finish in the same place, you’ve basically just completed a half marathon. Many would argue that it’s one of the most scenic runs in Dubai – you can see all the way down to the Burj Khalifa and the skyscrapers of Business Bay, and you’ll also pass by the Atlantis, and many of the city’s other most luxurious five-star properties. For something a little more leisurely, there’s also the four-kilometer track up and down the trunk of the palm.

Dubai Marina

This is the perfect running spot if you like to be out and about with plenty of other like-minded people, or if you are living in the local area. If you’re running around the whole thing, the track measures about 7.5km in length and provides some spectacular scenery in the form of glitzy skyscrapers on one side and the waters of the marina on the other. If you want to enjoy the wide boardwalk and avoid the crowds, steer clear of running around dinner time when the masses are out scouting out restaurants.

Jumeirah Lakes Towers

Jumeirah Lakes Towers, or JLT, is exceptionally accommodating to runners. A figure-of-eight run around JLT will tick up around seven to eight kilometers on your Fitbit, and there’s always a nice community vibe. You’ll pass by lots of families enjoying the green spaces and playgrounds, and many other people who are also out for their daily exercise. As an added bonus, there’s plenty of fantastic restaurants and cafes for a post-run bite.

Safa Park

There are many green, leafy spots around Dubai that are perfect for running. One of the best is Safa Park, a family-friendly destination that is home to a short 3.5km jogging track. An earthy route that is springy underfoot, there’s a bunch of workout stations along the way if you feel like your run isn’t enough of a workout by itself. Down the other end of town, along the city’s other important waterway, you’ll also find Dubai Creek Park. Another hotspot for runners, it has great views back over the Dubai skyline and it takes you through some of the older, and arguably most charming, parts of Dubai.
